The Valloires Abbey
Valloires, one of the loveliest abbeys in France

Nestling in the valley of the river Authie in Picardy, Valloires brings together architecture, religious art, and natural beauty tamed in sumptuous gardens.

The original abbey was built in the 12th century by Cistercian monks from Burgundy. They planted hundreds of fruit trees, notably pear trees, and their pear brandy was much appreciated in England. Wars and vandalism put an end to its prosperity and the medieval abbey fell into ruin.

The rebuilding was completed in 1750. The sober architecture offers wonderful contrast to the lavish interior, with its many baroque treasures including statues, wooden choir stalls, wrought-iron gates

The Abbey is set amid famous gardens, which cover seven hectares and embrace a unique collection of over 4000 flowers and shrubs. Rose garden, themed gardens, rare plants… there is something to delight the eye at every turn.

Every year, visitors flock to Valloires in increasing numbers to admire this sacred jewel in its green and flower-strewn setting .
