How terribly sad for you after all your work and
after all your success with the Festival. I feel very privileged to have taken part in the concerts at Valloires and am so sorry that I won't be there this summer.

I am so sorry to hear your news about Valloires. You really achieved something extraordinary in the three festivals there. Not only the quality of music-making, which surely rivaled any festival in the world, but the wonderful atmosphere of communication between performers and public. I will cherish my memories and will be always grateful to you for initiating my partnership with Imo. It was poignant that we had just performed Die Schöne Müllerin together in the newly renovated Alice Tully when I received your e-mail. Nothing is ever lost and the spirit of Valloires will live on - and our lives will be richer for it.

I am so sorry to hear that the Festival is to be discontinued. What a horrible and sad casualty of this recession. I just wanted to say how proud you should both feel about what you achieved in those three years. The atmosphere at the Festival was very special and everyone felt it, every musician and every audience member. We won't forget it easily and I do hope that in the not too distant future it can rise again and live on. In the meantime thank you for wonderful memories.

The Fesival de Valloires had quickly become the musical highlight of our year (and we go to a lot) and is irreplaceable. You don't need me to tell you that of course, and I'm acutely conscious of how much it must mean to you to have to close it. No other festival I've visited came close.

Thank you for providing us all with such great pleasure. We gained a huge amount from the two festivals we attended (I wish to hell I'd known earlier about the first!).... the exceptional music making, the chance to make and renew friendships, the perfect Normandy setting, meeting you, your wife and family, Francoise and the staff....I could go on.

Valloires was indeed a jewel.

J'ai été peinée d'apprendre que le Festival devait s'arrêter. Je garde un souvenir intense de mon séjour à Valloires, de l'atmosphère unique qui s'en dégageait, déjà, lors de la toute première édition, et de ces moments de rencontres et d'échanges que vous aviez su provoquer entre tous les participants.
Ces moments restent gravés , tout comme la chaleur de votre accueil et des moments partagés.

J'ai eu beaucoup de plaisir à travailler avec vous; c'était un festival de grande qualité, mais que peut-être ce n'est qu'une pose pour laissé passer cette " tempête ".

Bravo pour le plaisir que vous nous avez donné pendant trois années, pour votre courage à vouloir lancer un pont culturel entre les deux rives du Channel, pour votre simplicité et votre sobriété, pour nous avoir fait connaître des interprètes inoubliables et jeunes le plus souvent, pour les immenses services que vous avez rendus à la musique de chambre au nord de Paris et à l'est de Londres. Et encore merci pour nous avoir offert un lieu de convivialité exceptionnel dans un site également exceptionnel.

The demise of Le Festival de Valloires is a real tragedy after all the selfeless work that you and everyone concerned with the Festival have put into it.

I have organised many events during my lifetime, but I doubt that I have done any as complex and at such a pinnacle of perfection with only La Creme de la Creme that Valloires has been; only if one has organised events can one have any appreciation of the volume of work and the attention to detail that have been entailed at Valloires.

So "Chapeau pour vous" and serious and sad commiseratons.

C'est en effet une très triste nouvelle que l'arrêt du Festival qui avait fait ses preuves tant en terme de professionnalisme qu'en terme d'audience.
Le festival me laisse graver en mémoire des très grands moments d'émotion musicale, de découverte de jeunes talents exceptionnels et d'une ambiance très chaleureuse autour de la musique et d'un lieux magnifique. Ces moments vont me manquer.

Dans le cadre harmonieux des jardins et de l'abbaye qui ajoutait au plaisir de la musique ceux des yeux et des parfums, je garde et garderais toujours un souvenir unique de goût et de sensibilité.
En vous remerciant encore une fois d'avoir pu nous en faire profiter, j'espère que vous trouverez l'occasion de nous faire partager votre passion éclairée de la musique.

Je pense sincèrement que Valloires, la vallée de l'Authie et le département de la Somme viennent de perdre un élément majeur de rayonnement culturel et touristique : une bonne étoile s'était posée sur l'abbaye de Valloires, elle vient de s'éteindre.

So very sorry that the Festival will not take place this year. Our visit last year was one of the most enjoyable and relaxed visits to any Festival we have ever attended. And what a lovely venue! Do so hope that as and when the economy turns it will be possible to resurrect this little gem.

We organised our holidays around the Festival: it was wonderful. The intimacy of singers and audience was something not experienced by us in England.

Imogen Cooper's piano playing was the best we have ever heard. Valloires was out of this world. We will miss the Festival greatly.

Thank you for all your efforts to make the Festival a success. If it were possible, it would be nice to think that there might be some one-off concerts so that the memory of the Festival is kept alive in hope of better times.

C'est avec beaucoup de tristesse que nous apprenons cette nouvelle.
Cela fait maintenant trois ans que nous participions à ce superbe festival dont nous garderons quantité de moments forts partagés avec les différents interprêtes de grand talent et le public si chaleureux à Valloires.
Nous avions réussi, et sans difficulté, à venir accompagnées d'amis mélomanes de plus en plus nombreux, amis que nous avions convaincus de la richesse artistique de votre Festival.
Aussi, nous espérons de tout notre coeur que dans un avenir meilleur, nous aurons plaisir à vous retrouver .

Nous sommes venus deux années de suite à votre Festival et nous avions la ferme attention d’y venir à nouveau cette année, tant son intérêt était évident pour nous chanteurs professionnels. Qu’il s’agisse du choix de la programmation comme des artistes invités, nous ne pouvons qu’être désolés à notre tour. Simple exemple, où trouver en France un festival qui ose programmer des cycles complets de Schubert et proposer une telle brochette d’artistes ?

Valloires was a superb festival, great music and musicians in a wonderful location and I realise how disappointing it must have been to make such a decision.
All of us who have been to Valloires will not forget it .

I am really, really sorry to hear this. I was always knocked out by what you managed to achieve with the Festival and the extraordinary calibre of artists that performed there. I am sure it makes sense to choose this moment to stop and leave those great memories, rather than trying to achieve the impossible in the current climate.

Si ce Festival n’arrive pas à émerger dans l’époque où nous vivons, c’est que le service public de la culture ne va vraiment pas bien …

Je regrette vivement que le Festival ne soit pas organisé en 2009. Je me faisais une joie d'y assister cette année. Je garde un souvenir de moments musicaux intenses, de très grande qualité. Pour moi, Valloires et Saint-Michel en Thierache étaient les 2 grands festivals de la Picardie.
Je comprends votre décision qui est essentiellement économique, le département de la Somme avait 4 festivals d'été, il n'en reste plus qu'un seul.

Several people among the shopkeepers in Montreuil have told me of saddened customers who have told them how they will miss Valloires and how special it was to them. I shall. The most wonderful parts of the festival for me were the intimacy and completely relaxed atmosphere, the interaction between the musicians and the audience and the fact that it attracted such a wonderfully diverse collection of people. I not only heard and learned to love music I would never have known but I met such a wonderful variety of human beings too, all of us drawn together by an extraordinary magic and extraordinary music. It is not something which is otherwise accessible to someone like me and I shall miss it all terribly - but - you did give us all something unique and I am so grateful to have been a part of it all.
